Lawns 2 Legumes Program
The Minnesota board of water and soil resources has developed a unique program called Lawns 2 Legumes to improve pollinator habitat within small and medium sized residential lawns. Funding will be provided through the Environment and Natural Resource Trust Fund (ENRTF) and has three components mentioned below.
Components:
- Grants to demonstrate neighborhoods
- Grants and coaching for individuals
- Outreach and education for all interested Minnesota residents
This program is specifically designed to improve habitat for the Rusty Patched Bumblebee, a federally endangered species. However, this program will aid many other pollinators along with Monarch Butterflies, birds, amphibians and reptiles.
“People don’t typically think of planting and seeding programs in their backyard. This program kind of changes that and allows homeowners with smaller to larger than average size lawns to enhance their property and also provide pollinator benefits. Each little bit helps,“ commented wildlife specialist Jordan Zimmer of Elk Mound Seed.
A copious amount of resources have been provided for this program. Here are some of the more valuable to help homeowners understand the process of pollinators and how they can help within their property.
This initiative even has a Twitter handle at #Lawns2Legumes.
