Open pollinated seed corn varieties are seed corn varieties dating back to the early 1900s. These varieties were improved based off of field-selected traits and the nicest ears from the nicest plants were harvested to be planted for the subsequent crop. Open pollinated seed corn varieties tend to have much greater genetic variability than the hybrid varieties we are used to today.
